When I first started browsing around WordPress and saw people getting nominated for awards, I have to admit, I was pretty jealous. Then I got nominated for one, learned more about it, and realized that it’s not actually something that I want.
It turns out that when you get nominated, you’re supposed to nominate 14 other bloggers. You know what that reminds me of? A big fat pyramid scheme. I would know, I’ve been in several. It’s basically just giving more work for yourself in order to receive a glorified collection of pixels. As a guy who has dabbled in graphic design, I could just make my own set of pixels and would probably be more proud of that too.
J. L. Martin, I appreciate that you like my blog and I’m sorry if I sound like I’m shitting on you with what I’m saying. I don’t have any problems with the awards themselves and I genuinely don’t think ill of you at all for pursuing them. I’m just too lazy to even pat myself on the back. My main point is, I used to want one but now that I know what it is, I don’t feel the need to want one anymore and I just want to inform anyone who shares my (lack of) values that they don’t need it. Unless there are other (publicity or monetary) benefits of getting awards that I’m not aware of. In which case, I take back everything I just said and hope that I win one.
You should make your own award with those graphic design skills… and nominate me for it.
If I made one, I would give it to you with no need of a nomination process. That said, I’m not making one because I’m a lazy bum.
Do you know if you can post gifs? If so, I might make a cool animated one. I coded a really neat dynamic animation last year and I might dig it back up and use it. I’m planning to write a blog post about that and other cool things I coded in previous years just as soon as my domain is back up. I renewed it but they’re taking their sweet time bringing it back online.
Totally lame… about the domain thing. I have no idea if you can post gifs. WordPress is stingy about things sometimes. Drives me nuts.
I checked. WordPress seems to support gifs. I finally posted the article with the cool animation thing. Go check it out and see if you might be interested. …I wonder if I’m making an offer I can’t keep because I don’t think I’m motivated enough to do all that work.
